Ron Leifer, MD, è stato uno dei primi studenti di Thomas Szasz. Quando la direzione dell’università di Syracuse tentò di stroncare sul nascere la carriera di Szasz, fu grazie all’intervento di Ron Leifer e Ernest Becker che Thomas Szasz riuscì a salvare la propria cattedra — un’intervento che costò a Leifer la scomunica a vita dal mondo accademico.

Molti di voi ricorderanno Ron Leifer per la sua partecipazione al Tribunale di Foucault sullo Stato della Psichiatria. Leifer è uno psichiatra buddista con alle spalle oltre mezzo secolo di battaglie contro la psichiatria, e altrettanti anni dedicati allo sviluppo e alla pratica di una psicoterapia etica e rispettosa dell’individuo. In 50 anni di ricerche, studio, e pratica professionale, Ron Leifer ha sviluppato un proprio modello di psicoterapia fondato sul rifiuto della psichiatria tradizionale e degli interventi farmacologici e coercitivi, sviluppando un approccio all’emotività ed alla psiche che prende le mosse dal buddismo tibetano, dal pensiero di Szasz e di Becker.
